FIFA World Cup 2026 in Kansas City — The Complete Arrowhead Stadium Guide

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri is the heart of American football tailgating culture — and now it hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Opened in 1972 and home to the Kansas City Chiefs, Arrowhead holds 76,416 fans and once recorded the loudest crowd roar in sports history at 142.2 dB. It's fully open-air with no roof, meaning weather is part of the experience — expect 85–95°F with Midwest humidity and the ever-present possibility of summer thunderstorms rolling across the Great Plains. For the World Cup, Arrowhead hosts group stage matches that will bring international football to the American heartland for the first time in history.

Kansas City is the BBQ capital of America, the birthplace of a distinct style of jazz, and — critically for World Cup visitors — the most affordable host cityin the entire tournament. Hotels start at $100/night. A world-class BBQ plate is $15. Craft beer is $5. But there's a catch that defines the entire KC experience: zero public transit to the stadium. No rail line. No match-day bus. You drive, you rideshare, or you book a car service. That's it. The Truman Sports Complex sits on I-70 east of downtown, and every single one of the 76,416 fans arrives by road.

If you're also attending matches at MetLife Stadium in New York — including the World Cup Final on July 19, 2026 — we provide complete ground transportation for the NYC leg. Airport transfers from JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, and Teterboro. Hotel-to-stadium round trips with no surge pricing. MCI to JFK/EWR is a 3-hour flight with multiple daily options.

Venue

Arrowhead Stadium — Everything You Need to Know

The loudest stadium in America meets the world's game. Open-air, no compromise, pure atmosphere.

Stadium specs

76,416 seats — third-largest World Cup venue in the US behind MetLife and AT&T Stadium. Opened in 1972, major renovation in 2010 at a cost of $375 million. Fully open-air — no roof, no canopy, no retractable panels. Part of the Truman Sports Complex alongside Kauffman Stadium (Kansas City Royals). Over 25,000 parking spaces surrounding the venue. The stadium bowl is a single continuous structure creating one of the most intimidating and enclosed environments in all of sports. Address: 1 Arrowhead Drive, Kansas City, MO 64129.

Past mega-events

Home of the Kansas City Chiefs since 1972. Four Super Bowl champion teams (IV, LIV, LVII, LVIII). Guinness World Record for loudest crowd roar in sports — 142.2 dB, set September 29, 2014 during a Monday Night Football game against the Patriots. Regular season games routinely draw capacity crowds of 76,000+. Hosted major international soccer friendlies and USMNT matches. FIFA has inspected and fully approved the venue — pitch dimensions, infrastructure, and all facilities meet World Cup standards.

Open-air reality

No roof. No retractable panels. No canopy over the seating bowl. You are fully exposed to the elements for the entire match. In June and July that means 85–95°F with sticky Midwest humidity and the real possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. Upper deck seats receive direct sun for daytime matches with zero shade. Lower bowl seats and the west side of the stadium get shade earlier in the afternoon. Sunscreen SPF 50+, a wide-brim hat, and multiple water bottles are survival tools — not suggestions.

Tailgating culture

This is Arrowhead's superpower and what separates it from every other World Cup venue on the planet. The parking lots open 4–5 hours before kickoff. Charcoal grills fire up. Full-size BBQ smokers roll in on trailers. Cornhole tournaments spring up between every row of cars. Music blasts from truck beds. 25,000 vehicles worth of pregame energy transform the asphalt into the greatest outdoor party in American sports. For Chiefs games, the tailgate IS the event — the game is the second act. For the World Cup, expect this tradition to collide with international supporter culture in a once-in-a-lifetime atmosphere. International visitors: do NOT skip the tailgate. Arrive 3–4 hours early.

Accessibility

Fully ADA compliant with wheelchair-accessible seating on all levels of the stadium bowl. Elevator access to all upper concourses. Accessible restrooms on every concourse level with ample capacity. Companion seating available adjacent to all wheelchair positions. Assisted listening devices available at Guest Services desks. ADA-designated parking in lots closest to entry gates — arrive early as these spaces fill first. Service animals permitted throughout. Sensory-friendly quiet spaces available for those who need them.

What you can't bring

Clear bag policy enforced: 12"x6"x12" maximum for clear plastic bags. Small clutch purse 4.5"x6.5" as the only non-clear alternative. No outside food or beverages past security (those stay in the tailgate lot). No professional cameras with detachable lenses. No drones, no umbrellas, no weapons, and no oversized flags or banners. Coolers and chairs must remain in the parking lot for your tailgate. FIFA may impose additional World Cup-specific restrictions including bans on vuvuzelas, political banners, and large flag poles.

Matches

World Cup Matches at Arrowhead Stadium

Kansas City brings heartland passion and the loudest crowd in America to the World Cup stage.

Group stage dates

Arrowhead Stadium is expected to host 4–6 group stage matches between June 11 and June 28, 2026. Kansas City's central US location, massive tailgating infrastructure, and passionate sports culture make it a natural home for high-energy group stage fixtures. Exact dates and team assignments will be confirmed following the FIFA draw. Expect matches featuring North American, South American, and European nations.

Knockout round potential

With 76,416 capacity and Arrowhead's proven ability to generate deafening atmosphere, the stadium is a strong candidate for Round of 16 matches. The open-air environment and American football heritage create a unique World Cup setting. Kansas City's affordability and central geography also make it accessible for fans traveling from multiple host cities.

Kickoff times

Expect kickoff times of 12 PM, 3 PM, and 6 PM Central Time for group stage matches. Day matches at noon and 3 PM mean full sun exposure in an open-air stadium — bring sun protection. Evening 6 PM kickoffs are significantly more comfortable with temperatures dropping and the sun angle lowering. The tailgate experience is better for evening matches too — less punishing heat while you grill.

Capacity configuration

Standard football configuration seats 76,416 with the pitch installed at the center of the bowl. FIFA may add temporary lower-bowl seating closer to the pitch. The continuous bowl design means no corners, no gaps — every seat has a direct sightline. Upper deck seats are steep and provide excellent views but are fully exposed to sun and weather. Lower bowl sections behind the goals offer the most intense atmosphere.

Match day atmosphere

Kansas City's Latin American community, particularly in KCK (Kansas City, Kansas), will bring authentic football culture. Matches involving Mexico, the US, and Central American nations will create an electric environment. The Sporting KC fanbase adds MLS supporter energy. FIFA Fan Festivals will be set up in the Power & Light District downtown. The tailgate lots will blend American BBQ culture with international flag-waving and chanting — unlike anything seen at any World Cup before.

Ticket tiers

FIFA ticket categories range from Category 1 (lower bowl sideline, best shade) to Category 4 (upper deck behind goals, full sun exposure). Hospitality packages include suite access, catering, and premium seating with shade coverage. Group stage face value: $50–300. Knockout rounds: $150–600+. Purchase only through FIFA.com or verified resale platforms like StubHub. KC matches may be slightly cheaper than marquee cities like NYC, LA, and Miami.

No transit, period: Arrowhead sits on I-70 at the Truman Sports Complex — no rail line reaches it, no bus route runs on game day. Every single person drives. With 76,000+ fans converging, I-70, I-435, and Stadium Drive become gridlocked before and after matches. A driver who knows the back-road exits — Blue Ridge Cutoff, Raytown Road, 40 Highway bypass — saves you 20–30 minutes in each direction. This is the single biggest logistical reality of the KC World Cup experience.

Where to stay

Best Neighborhoods for World Cup Visitors

KC straddles two states — Missouri and Kansas. Most of the action is on the Missouri side.

Downtown / Power & Light

KC's top entertainment and nightlife hub. The Power & Light District packs 50+ bars, restaurants, live music venues, and clubs into a walkable two-block area around a central plaza. Hotels $140–350/night including Loews Kansas City, Hotel Kansas City (21c Museum Hotel), and convention properties. 15 min to Arrowhead off-peak, 25–35 min on match day. Best for nightlife, walkability, and being at the center of World Cup energy. This is where the FIFA Fan Festival will likely be located.

Crossroads Arts District

KC's trendiest neighborhood and the creative heart of the city. Art galleries, craft breweries, boutique restaurants, coffee shops, and murals on every wall. First Fridays art walk draws thousands monthly. Adjacent to Downtown. Hotels and Airbnb $120–280/night. 15 min to Arrowhead. Best for culture, the food scene, and authentic local vibes. Boulevard Brewing Company taproom is right here. Messenger Coffee and Made in KC shops round out the experience.

Country Club Plaza

Kansas City's iconic outdoor shopping district with stunning Spanish-inspired architecture, ornamental fountains on every corner, and upscale dining. Built in 1923 as America's first outdoor shopping center. Hotels $160–400/night including the Intercontinental and The Raphael. 12 min to Arrowhead Stadium. Best for an upscale experience. Beautiful area to walk, dine, and explore. Adjacent to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Westport

KC's original entertainment district — grittier, more authentic, and more affordable than Power & Light. Dive bars, live music venues, and eclectic restaurants line Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. Kelly's Westport Inn is the oldest bar in Kansas City, operating since 1947. Hotels and Airbnb $100–250/night. 15 min to Arrowhead. Best for budget nightlife and a younger crowd. More character than the polished Power & Light scene.

Near Arrowhead / Independence

Hotels along I-70 near the Truman Sports Complex — the closest option to the stadium at just 5–10 min drive. Chain hotels like Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Comfort Inn at $80–180/night — the best budget option in the city. Limited dining and nightlife but unbeatable proximity. Skip all match day traffic. Independence also offers the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, a surprisingly excellent attraction for history fans.

Overland Park (Kansas side)

Suburban, safe, and family-friendly. The largest city in Johnson County, Kansas with excellent restaurants along 119th Street and College Boulevard. Hotels $100–220/night. 20–25 min to Arrowhead. Best for families and budget-conscious travelers who want a quieter base. Near Oak Park Mall and the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead. You will need to drive everywhere, but parking is free and easy.

18th & Vine / Midtown

The historic jazz district and surrounding midtown neighborhoods offer a more local, less touristy experience. Close to the American Jazz Museum and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Budget-friendly Airbnb and boutique options $80–200/night. 10 min to Arrowhead. Excellent for history buffs and music lovers who want to be embedded in KC culture rather than the tourist circuit.

Crown Center / Union Station

KC's family-friendly hub centered around Hallmark's Crown Center complex and the magnificent Union Station. The Westin Crown Center connects directly to attractions. Hotels $130–300/night. 12 min to Arrowhead. Best for families — Science City, Legoland Discovery Center, and the SEA LIFE Aquarium are all here. Union Station's architecture alone is worth a visit.

Weather

KC Weather During the World Cup

Open-air stadium. Midwest summer. No AC, no roof, no shade. Weather is part of the match.

Temperature

Daily highs: 85–95°F (29–35°C). Occasional 100°F+ days are not uncommon. Overnight lows: 68–75°F providing only modest relief. Heat index with humidity regularly reaches 100–105°F making it feel significantly hotter than the thermometer reads. June is slightly cooler and more bearable; July is peak heat and peak misery. Not as extreme as Houston or Dallas, but the open-air stadium means you feel every single degree with no escape.

Humidity

50–70% humidity is typical throughout June and July. Not Gulf Coast level but still oppressively sticky. Combined with 90°F+ temperatures, the humid air makes direct sun feel punishing and sweat evaporates slowly. The Midwest combination of heat and humidity catches visitors off guard — especially those from drier climates. Drink water before you feel thirsty. Start hydrating the morning of, not at the stadium.

Thunderstorms

This is Tornado Alley country. Summer thunderstorms are common, sometimes severe, and they can develop rapidly from clear skies. Lightning, heavy rain, damaging hail, and strong winds are all possible. Open-air Arrowhead means matches could face legitimate weather delays. Storms typically pass in 30–60 minutes but can be intense. Check forecasts daily and have a rain plan. If tornado sirens sound, seek shelter immediately — stadium staff will direct you to interior concourse areas.

Sun & UV

UV index 8–10 (very high to extreme) during World Cup months. 15+ hours of daylight in late June. SPF 50+ sunscreen is absolutely essential and must be reapplied every 2 hours. Most Arrowhead seats have NO shade whatsoever — upper deck west-side seats get shade earliest in the afternoon but most of the bowl is fully exposed. Day matches mean 2–3 hours of direct, unfiltered Midwest sun. Sunglasses and a hat are mandatory, not optional.

Evening matches

Temperature drops to 78–85°F by 8 PM offering significant relief. Evening kickoffs at 6 PM Central are dramatically more comfortable than midday starts. Sunset brings respite from direct UV but the humidity lingers well into the night. The tailgate atmosphere is better in the evening too — less punishing heat while you grill, longer golden hour for photos, and the lot energy builds as the sun goes down. Request evening tickets if possible.

What to wear

Light, breathable, moisture-wicking clothing. Your team jersey over nothing — cotton underneath will be soaked in 20 minutes. Shorts mandatory. Hat and sunglasses are non-negotiable survival gear. Bring a light, packable rain jacket that folds into a pocket for possible thunderstorms. Comfortable athletic shoes — you will walk long distances through massive parking lots on hot asphalt. Consider a light layer for cooler evenings if the temperature drops after sunset.

The BBQ capital of America. But there's much more than smoke and sauce in this deeply underrated food city.

Happy Gillis serves outstanding brunch. The Farmhouse sources everything locally. Lidia's Kansas City (Lidia Bastianich's Italian restaurant at Crown Center) makes pasta in front of you. The Crossroads has the hottest new restaurant openings in the city. Budget: $10–35.
  • Saturday morning City Market is a KC ritual — arrive before 9 AM for best selection
  • River Market neighborhood is walkable with exceptional brunch spots
  • Lidia's at Crown Center — handmade pasta, world-class Italian, moderate prices
  • Pigwich at City Market — pork sandwiches that are worth the wait
Brunch & Breakfast
The Russell in the Crossroads serves creative seasonal brunch in a gorgeous space. Succotash on Troost has become a weekend institution. Room 39 offers two locations with farm-to-table breakfast. Eggtc. is the fast-casual egg specialist. You Say Tomato in Westport does homestyle breakfast right. Happy Gillis at the River Market is perpetually packed. Budget: $10–25. Weekend waits can hit 30–60 min at popular spots.
  • Happy Gillis — go before 9 AM or face a 45-minute wait
  • The Russell brunch menu changes seasonally — always excellent
  • Succotash biscuits and gravy are a KC must-try
  • Room 39 in Midtown has the best eggs Benedict in the city
Pre-match near Arrowhead
The tailgate IS the pre-match dining experience at Arrowhead and nothing else comes close. Bring a portable grill, buy pre-seasoned meats from McGonigle's Market on Ward Parkway (the best butcher in KC), and cook in the lot surrounded by 25,000 cars of fellow fans. For those not tailgating: LC's BBQ is 5 minutes from the stadium on East 40 Highway. Chain options line I-70. The real KC move is arriving 3–4 hours early and eating in the lot. Budget: $10–25.
  • Tailgating at Arrowhead is not optional — it IS the experience, embrace it fully
  • McGonigle's Market sells pre-seasoned, ready-to-grill meats and KC-style sausages
  • BYOB to the tailgate — no alcohol restrictions in the parking lot
  • Bring ice, a cooler, lawn chairs, and a cornhole set to do it right
Desserts & Sweet Treats
Betty Rae's Ice Cream in the River Market and Waldo neighborhoods serves creative flavors that rival any ice cream in America — burnt ends ice cream exists and it is excellent. Foo's Fabulous Frozen Custard is a KC classic. Christopher Elbow Artisan Chocolates in the Crossroads creates hand-painted truffles that double as art. Dolce Bakery for European pastries. Andre's Confiserie Suisse for Swiss chocolates since 1955. Budget: $5–15.

Soccer in KC

Kansas City's Football Culture

One of the strongest and most established soccer markets in the American heartland.

Sporting Kansas City

Children's Mercy Park, Kansas City, KS. Founded in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz, then Wizards, now Sporting KC. Two MLS Cup championships (2000, 2013) and multiple US Open Cup titles. One of the finest soccer-specific stadiums in America with 18,467 seats and an intimate atmosphere that amplifies crowd noise. The Cauldron supporters group leads chants, unfurls massive tifos, and creates a European-style atmosphere. Tickets $25–80. Located 25 min from Arrowhead. One of MLS's most passionate and loyal fanbases — they have punched above their weight for decades.

KC Current (NWSL)

CPKC Stadium — the first stadium in the world built specifically for a women's professional sports team. Opened in 2024 on the Berkley Riverfront in downtown KC with stunning views of the Missouri River and city skyline. 11,500 seats. Groundbreaking in every sense — architecturally and culturally. The KC Current play during June and July, overlapping with the World Cup — attend for a piece of genuine sports history. Tickets $20–75. Located 20 min from Arrowhead. A must-visit for any football fan.

The heartland factor

Kansas City has punched above its weight in American soccer for decades. The old Wizards hosted the very first MLS Cup in 1996. US Soccer has regularly used both Arrowhead Stadium and Children's Mercy Park for World Cup qualifiers, friendlies, and Gold Cup matches. The substantial Latin community in KCK adds authentic football culture, passion, and expertise. Expect a World Cup atmosphere that uniquely mixes Midwestern tailgating traditions with international supporter energy — something no other host city can replicate.

Youth soccer scene

Kansas City has one of the deepest youth soccer ecosystems in the country. Sporting KC's academy is a top producer of MLS and national team talent. Heartland Soccer Association is the largest youth soccer league in the US by participation. Kansas and Missouri both have strong high school and club soccer cultures. This means World Cup crowds in KC will be knowledgeable, passionate, and genuinely invested in the quality of play on the pitch — not just the spectacle.

Shopping

Shopping Guide

From Country Club Plaza boutiques to BBQ sauce gift sets — KC covers every souvenir need.

The Sporting KC team shop at Children's Mercy Park has MLS merchandise. Third-party vendors will line the tailgate lots and streets on match days.

BBQ Sauce & Food Gifts

KC BBQ sauce sets make the best souvenir — Joe's KC, Gates, Jack Stack, and Bryant's all bottle their sauces ($5–12 each). Gift sets at local shops: $15–40. McGonigle's Market sells rubs and seasonings. Made in KC stores carry curated local food gifts. Boulevard Brewing merchandise and bottles: $15–40. Ship BBQ sauce home — it packs easily.

Malls & General Shopping

Oak Park Mall in Overland Park is the largest in the metro. Town Center Plaza in Leawood has upscale options. Zona Rosa in the Northland combines outdoor shopping with entertainment. Legends Outlets in KCK (near Sporting KC) has 100+ outlet stores at 30–70% off. The River Market has local artisans and vintage shops on weekends.

Crossroads & Local Art

The Crossroads Arts District has dozens of galleries selling original KC art, prints, and handmade goods. First Fridays make gallery-hopping easy. Hammerpress for letterpress prints and cards. Birdies for KC-themed gifts. Urban Provisions for curated Kansas City goods. Art at these galleries ranges from $20 prints to $5,000+ originals.

Vintage & Thrift

KC has an excellent thrift and vintage scene. River Market Antiques for curated vintage. Westport Flea Market (yes, the burger joint is also a mini flea market). Urban Mining Homewares for reclaimed goods. Brass Armadillo Antique Mall (35,000 sq ft). Mission, KS has concentrated thrift stores along Johnson Drive. Budget-friendly shopping that feels like treasure hunting.

Practical

Safety & Practical Tips

What you need to know to navigate KC like a local.

Safety

Downtown, Power & Light, the Plaza, Crossroads, and Westport are all safe for visitors day and night. Standard urban awareness applies after dark — stay with groups, keep valuables secure. Arrowhead lots are well-patrolled on game day with heavy security. FIFA will deploy additional tournament security. KC is significantly safer than most large host cities. The friendly, welcoming Midwest culture is genuine — people will go out of their way to help visitors.

Phone & WiFi

International visitors should get a US SIM or eSIM before arrival. T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon all have strong coverage across the KC metro. Free WiFi at most hotels, cafes, the new MCI terminal, and public spaces. Stadium WiFi is available but expect it to be slow and unreliable with 76,000 users on the network. Download offline maps before match day. Cell service inside Arrowhead can be spotty at capacity.

Tipping

Restaurants: 18–20% on the pre-tax total is standard. Bars: $1–2 per drink. Car service drivers: 15–20%. Hotels: $2–5/night for housekeeping, $3–5 for valet. BBQ counter service: $1–3 in the tip jar or 15% if there is table service. Missouri minimum wage is lower than coastal states — service workers genuinely depend on tips to make a living wage. Do not skip tipping.

Getting around

You need a car. Period. Full stop. KC has a free streetcar but it covers only 2 miles of Downtown — useful for hotel-to-Power & Light but nothing else. No rail to the airport. No rail to the stadium. No bus to the stadium on match day. Uber and Lyft work and are relatively affordable (KC is not a surge-heavy market except immediately post-events at Arrowhead). Rent a car or book a car service. Gas is cheap at $2.50–3.50/gallon. Parking is free or cheap everywhere except match day.

Health

No vaccinations needed for US travel. Tap water is safe throughout the metro. CVS, Walgreens, and pharmacies are widespread. University of Kansas Health System and Saint Luke's are major hospital systems with emergency rooms. Heat-related illness is the primary health concern for summer visitors — hydrate aggressively, wear sunscreen, and know the signs of heat exhaustion (nausea, dizziness, heavy sweating). If tornado warning sirens sound, seek shelter in interior rooms immediately — stadium staff will direct you.

International visitors

ESTA for Visa Waiver Program countries or B-1/B-2 visa — apply well in advance. MCI has limited international flights — you will likely connect through Chicago O'Hare, Dallas DFW, or Denver. Currency is USD. Credit cards accepted everywhere. Sales tax is 9.125% in KCMO and not included in listed prices. Note: KC straddles two states — Missouri and Kansas have different tax rates. Kansas sales tax is 6.5% state plus local additions.

Power & Adapters

US Type A/B plugs at 120V/60Hz. International visitors need a plug adapter — buy one before you travel or at any Target/Walmart. Most hotels have USB charging built into bedside lamps. Bring a portable battery for match days — phone batteries drain fast in heat and with heavy photo/video use. The new MCI terminal has charging stations throughout.

Language

English is the primary language. Spanish is widely spoken, especially in KCK and along Southwest Boulevard. KC is genuinely friendly to international visitors — Midwest hospitality is real, not performative. People will offer directions, restaurant recommendations, and BBQ opinions without being asked. 'Y'all' is standard. If someone says 'you bet' they mean 'you're welcome.'

Budget

What Things Cost in Kansas City

The most affordable host city in the tournament. Your budget goes the furthest here — by a significant margin.

Hotels

Budget (near Arrowhead/I-70 chains): $80–150/night. Mid-range (Downtown/Crossroads): $140–250. Premium (Plaza/Intercontinental): $250–400. Luxury (Hotel Kansas City, Loews): $350–600. Expect 15–25% World Cup markup but even with markup, KC is 30–50% cheaper than NYC, LA, Miami, or San Francisco. Airbnb is strong in midtown and Westport neighborhoods.

Meals

BBQ plate: $12–25. Street tacos: $2–4 each. Casual sit-down dinner: $10–25. Mid-range restaurant: $25–45. Fine dining steakhouse: $50–100. Coffee: $4–6. Beer at a bar: $4–7. Beer at Arrowhead: $10–14. Burnt ends sandwich: $10–15. Stadium water: $5. Tailgate cooking supplies: $15–30 per person. KC is remarkably affordable for world-class food quality.

Transport

Uber normal ride: $8–20. Uber match-day surge: $25–60. KC Streetcar: free (Downtown only, 2 miles). Arrowhead parking: $30–50. Rental car: $35–70/day. Gas: $2.50–3.50/gallon (among the cheapest in the US). Car service: fixed rate, no surge. KC is one of the cheapest cities in America to get around by car. Free parking at most restaurants and attractions.

Match tickets

Group stage face value: $50–300. Resale: $100–500+. Knockout rounds face value: $150–600. Resale: $300–1,500+. KC matches may price slightly below marquee cities (LA, NYC, Miami) due to lower demand and smaller-market perception. Buy from FIFA official channels or verified resale platforms (StubHub, SeatGeek). Beware scalpers near the stadium on match day.

Nightlife

Beer at a bar: $4–7. Craft cocktail: $8–14. Glass of wine: $7–12. Club cover charge: $5–15 (many venues free). Happy hour specials: $3–6 drinks, $5–8 appetizers. Power & Light and Westport are remarkably affordable compared to coastal nightlife. Pre-game at your hotel and save even more. KC is a city where you can have a great night out for $40–60.

Shopping & Souvenirs

FIFA official jersey: $90–160. FIFA merch and souvenirs: $20–100+. Chiefs gear (why not?): $25–120. BBQ sauce gift set: $15–40. Boulevard Brewing merchandise: $15–40. Country Club Plaza shopping: moderate to upscale. Target and Walmart for travel basics and sunscreen. KC BBQ rubs and sauces are the best value souvenir you can bring home.

Activities & Attractions

National WWI Museum: $18. Nelson-Atkins Museum: free. Negro Leagues Baseball Museum: $15. Sporting KC match: $25–80. Boulevard Brewing tour: $10–20. Arrowhead Stadium tour: $15–25. KC Current match: $20–75. Union Station exhibits: $10–25. Many of KC's best attractions are free or under $20.

Connectivity

US eSIM: $20–40 for 2 weeks of data. Prepaid SIM card: $30–50 for 30 days of unlimited talk, text, and data. Free WiFi is widespread at hotels, cafes, and the airport. Hotel WiFi almost always included in room rate. International roaming: $5–15/day depending on carrier. Buy an eSIM before arriving to save money.

Pack smart

What to Pack for the World Cup in Kansas City

Open-air stadium + Midwest summer = preparation is everything.

Sun protection

SPF 50+ sunscreen — reapply every 2 hours without fail. Polarized sunglasses to cut glare. Wide-brim hat or cap to protect your face and neck. The open-air stadium means 2–3 hours of direct, unfiltered sun for day matches. No canopy. No shade for most seats. UV index 8–10 is brutal and burns can happen in under 30 minutes of unprotected exposure.

Footwear

Comfortable walking shoes or athletic sneakers — the parking lots are massive and you will walk 10–20 minutes from your car to the stadium gate on hot asphalt. Avoid flip-flops at the stadium (asphalt in 90°F sun is painfully hot). Casual shoes for Downtown and Plaza dining. Break in new shoes before the trip — blisters plus heat is miserable.

Clear bag

Arrowhead enforces a strict clear bag policy: 12x6x12 maximum for transparent bags. Small clutch purse 4.5x6.5 is the only non-clear option. NO regular backpacks, NO messenger bags, NO fanny packs unless clear — you will be turned away at the gate. Buy a clear bag before traveling. FIFA may add additional restrictions on top of the stadium policy.

Rain & storm gear

Compact rain poncho or packable rain jacket — NOT an umbrella (umbrellas are banned inside the stadium). Midwest thunderstorms are sudden, intense, and real. Waterproof phone case or Ziploc bag for electronics. Quick-dry clothing is better than cotton. If tornado sirens sound, seek interior shelter immediately — do not wait to see what happens.

Hydration gear

Reusable water bottle — essential in 85–95°F heat with humidity. Electrolyte packets (Liquid IV, Nuun) to replenish what you sweat out. A cooling towel for outdoor tailgating and the walk to the stadium. Dehydration is the number one health risk for summer visitors. Start hydrating the morning of the match, not when you arrive at the lot.

Health essentials

Prescription medications. Pain relievers (ibuprofen). Antacid for the BBQ and spicy food (you will eat a lot of both). Electrolyte tablets. Band-aids for blisters. Hand sanitizer. Aloe vera gel for inevitable sunburn. Insect repellent for outdoor evenings — Midwest mosquitoes are aggressive after sunset. Allergy medication if you have seasonal allergies — grass pollen is high in June.

Instagram

Best Photo Spots in Kansas City

KC is more photogenic than you expect. Fountains, murals, skyline, and stadium atmosphere.

Arrowhead Stadium exterior

The iconic red bowl set against the Great Plains sky. Best wide-angle from the Lot G and Lot M approaches. On match day the sea of red, international flags, smoking grills, and 25,000 tailgating vehicles create content that cannot be replicated anywhere. The stadium at sunset with storm clouds rolling in is pure Midwest drama.

Country Club Plaza fountains

KC is called the City of Fountains — over 200 throughout the metro, more than any city except Rome. The Plaza concentrates the most beautiful ones within walking distance. The J.C. Nichols Fountain is the most photographed landmark in Kansas City. Best at golden hour with the Spanish-tile rooftops glowing in the background.

KC Skyline from Liberty Memorial

The 217-foot Liberty Memorial tower provides the best panoramic view of the Kansas City skyline. Union Station in the foreground, downtown towers behind. Stunning at sunset and after dark when the city lights up. The WWI Museum grounds are free to explore and the tower observation deck is $6. The single best photo in KC.

Crossroads murals

Every wall in the Crossroads Arts District is a canvas. Massive, colorful murals cover entire building facades. New pieces appear regularly. Best explored on foot between 18th and 21st Streets along Baltimore and Main. Morning light is best for photography. During First Fridays, the streets are alive with art, music, and people.

Union Station

The Beaux-Arts limestone exterior is majestic. The Grand Hall interior with its 95-foot ceiling, three massive chandeliers weighing 3,500 pounds each, and original 1914 architecture is breathtaking. Free to enter. One of the most beautiful train stations in America. Best photographed from the south lawn with the Liberty Memorial behind you.

Tailgate atmosphere

The Arrowhead tailgate scene is unlike anything in world sports. Capture the smoke rising from hundreds of grills, the rows of flags, the cornhole tournaments, the custom smoker rigs, and the energy of 76,000 fans preparing for war. Arrive 3–4 hours early for the best content. Golden hour in the lot is magic.

CPKC Stadium riverfront

The new KC Current stadium on the Berkley Riverfront provides stunning views of the Missouri River with the downtown skyline behind. The stadium architecture itself is photogenic. The riverfront trail connects to the City Market. Best at sunset when the glass facade reflects golden light.

18th & Vine District

Historic neon signs, jazz club facades, and the iconic 18th & Vine street sign make for powerful cultural photography. The murals along Vine Street depict jazz legends. Inside The Blue Room during a live performance — moody, atmospheric shots. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum exterior and exhibits are deeply photogenic.

Families

Family-Friendly Kansas City

KC is one of the most family-friendly host cities. Affordable, safe, and packed with kid-friendly attractions.

Kansas City Zoo

202 acres in Swope Park with over 1,700 animals. The Africa exhibit is particularly impressive. Splash parks and a train ride keep kids entertained for hours. Air-conditioned buildings provide heat relief. $17 adults, $14 kids. 10 min from Arrowhead. One of the top zoos in the Midwest.

Science City & Museums

Science City at Union Station has hands-on exhibits for all ages — electricity, engineering, space. LEGOLAND Discovery Center at Crown Center. SEA LIFE Aquarium nearby. Nelson-Atkins Museum (free) has a family gallery. All air-conditioned — essential for escaping the summer heat. Multiple attractions in the Crown Center complex make for an easy full day.

Water parks & pools

Oceans of Fun water park adjacent to Worlds of Fun theme park in the Northland. Schlitterbahn Kansas City (seasonal). Most hotels have pools — choose one with a good pool for between-match recovery. Splash pads at various city parks are free. Summer heat makes water activities a necessity, not a luxury.

Worlds of Fun

The Kansas City metro's major theme park in the Northland — roller coasters, rides, and shows. Combined tickets with Oceans of Fun water park available. 20 min from Downtown, 30 min from Arrowhead. $50–75 per person. A full day of entertainment between matches. Go on weekdays to avoid crowds.

Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead

Overland Park's beloved family attraction — petting zoo, pony rides, fishing pond, and a recreated 1900s Kansas farm. $3 admission. Kids love it. Open seasonally in summer. 25 min from Arrowhead. Pair with lunch at one of Overland Park's excellent family restaurants on 119th Street.

Car seats for NYC leg

If also attending MetLife Stadium matches in New York, we provide car seats for $25 per seat for all transfers. Rear-facing, forward-facing, and booster seats available. Specify children's ages when booking. KC rental car companies offer child seats for $10–15/day. Airlines allow car seats on board at no extra charge.

Transit

Public Transit Deep Dive

KC has minimal public transit. Here is exactly what exists — and what does not.

KC Streetcar (Free)

A free streetcar runs 2 miles through Downtown from River Market to Union Station and Crown Center. Useful for hotel-to-Power & Light or hotel-to-restaurants. Does NOT reach the airport, the stadium, the Plaza, or Westport. Extension to UMKC/Plaza is under construction but will not be complete by 2026. Nice for Downtown exploration — useless for match day logistics.

RideKC Bus

KC has a bus system but it is limited in coverage, frequency, and reliability. The MAX bus rapid transit line runs on Main Street from River Market south. No dedicated bus service to Arrowhead on match day. Not recommended for World Cup visitors — the network is designed for local commuters, not event transportation. Routes do not serve tourist corridors well.

Event shuttles (TBD)

FIFA and local organizers will likely set up dedicated World Cup shuttle routes from Downtown, the Plaza, and potentially MCI airport. These will be the only non-car option to reach Arrowhead. Expect them to sell out — book immediately when announced. Routes from major hotel clusters. $10–20 round trip estimated. Capacity will be limited for 76,000-person events.

Bikes & Scooters

KC has a growing bike-share program (B-cycle) Downtown and in the Crossroads. Electric scooters (Lime, Bird) are available in urban areas. Not practical for reaching Arrowhead — distances are too large and summer heat makes cycling genuinely dangerous. Useful for exploring Downtown neighborhoods between matches. The Trolley Trail and Indian Creek Trail are pleasant recreational rides.

History

Kansas City — Historical Context

Crossroads of America. Where the West begins.

Trails and trade

Kansas City grew at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers — the starting point of the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California trails in the 1800s. Its location made it a natural hub for cattle, grain, and eventually railroads. By the early 1900s KC was one of the most important cities in the American interior with a booming stockyard industry that directly gave birth to its BBQ tradition.

Jazz and Prohibition

During Prohibition in the 1920s and 1930s, Kansas City under political boss Tom Pendergast was famously "wide open" — jazz clubs, speakeasies, and nightlife thrived when the rest of America was dry. This produced the Kansas City jazz style — a blues-influenced, improvisational approach. Charlie Parker was born here. Count Basie built his legend here. The 18th & Vine district preserves this heritage today.

The Chiefs dynasty

The Kansas City Chiefs moved from Dallas (as the Texans) in 1963 and won Super Bowl IV in 1970. After decades of heartbreak, Patrick Mahomes led a modern dynasty: Super Bowl LIV (2020), LVII (2023), and LVIII (2024). Arrowhead Stadium's culture of noise, passion, and tailgating was built over 50+ years of Chiefs fandom. The World Cup arrives at a stadium already steeped in championship tradition.

Two states, one city

Kansas City uniquely straddles Missouri and Kansas. KCMO (Missouri side) has Downtown, the Plaza, Crossroads, and most nightlife. KCK (Kansas side) has Sporting KC, Legends Outlets, and authentic Latin American culture along Southwest Boulevard. Visitors often do not realize they cross state lines multiple times daily. Tax rates, liquor laws, and even time zones differ — though both sides are Central Time. The metro area spans 2.3 million people across both states.

Accessibility

Accessibility Guide

What mobility-impaired and disabled visitors need to know about KC and Arrowhead.

Stadium accessibility

Arrowhead is fully ADA compliant with wheelchair-accessible seating on all levels of the bowl. Elevators and escalators to all upper decks. Accessible restrooms on every concourse level. Companion seating adjacent to wheelchair positions. Service animals welcome. Assisted listening devices and closed captioning available at Guest Services. Sensory-friendly quiet spaces for those who need them.

Accessible transport

ADA parking at the stadium in designated lots closest to gates — these fill first so arrive early. The KC Streetcar is wheelchair accessible. Uber and Lyft offer WAV (wheelchair-accessible vehicle) options in the KC metro. Our NYC fleet includes ADA-accessible vehicles for the MetLife Stadium leg. Specify accessibility needs when booking any transport.

Accessible hotels

All major hotel chains in KC are ADA compliant with roll-in showers, grab bars, visual fire alarms, and wider doorways. Request accessible rooms at the time of booking — supply is limited and will be scarce during the World Cup. Newer properties near Downtown and the Plaza tend to have the best accessible room features. Confirm specific needs directly with the hotel.

City accessibility

KC is a car-centric city which can challenge those without accessible vehicles. Downtown sidewalks and the Power & Light District are well-maintained and flat. The Plaza has mostly accessible walkways. The Crossroads can have uneven surfaces and older buildings. The KC Streetcar is fully accessible. Heat makes outdoor mobility challenging — plan for shade breaks and air-conditioned stops throughout any walking itinerary.

Emergency

Emergency Information

Know before you go. Emergency contacts and medical resources.

Hospitals & Medical

Research Medical Center (10 min from Arrowhead) — closest ER to the stadium. University of Kansas Health System (20 min) — world-class Level I trauma center. Saint Luke's Hospital on the Plaza (15 min). Truman Medical Center Downtown. Children's Mercy Hospital for pediatric emergencies. Emergency: call 911 from any phone.

Police & Security

Emergency: 911 from any phone. Kansas City MO Police: (816) 234-5000. Kansas City KS Police: (913) 596-3000. Independence Police: (816) 325-7300. FIFA and local law enforcement will deploy dedicated security teams around Arrowhead Stadium, fan zones, and major gathering areas throughout the tournament.

Consulates & Embassies

Mexican Consulate: 1617 Baltimore Ave, Kansas City, MO. Limited consular presence for other nations — nearest full consulate offices for most countries are in Chicago or Dallas. Check your country's nearest consulate or embassy before traveling. The US State Department emergency line for foreign nationals: (202) 501-4444.

Local lingo

Kansas City Slang & Phrases

Sound like a local. Or at least understand what they are saying to you.

'Hi, may I help you?'

At Gates BBQ, the staff shouts this at you the moment you walk through the door — loudly, aggressively, and with zero hesitation. It is not rude. It is tradition since 1946. Have your order ready. Hesitate and you will hear it again, louder. This is the most Kansas City experience possible. Embrace it.

The Chop

The Arrowhead Chop — the tomahawk arm motion accompanied by a rhythmic chant — is the signature Chiefs crowd tradition. During the World Cup it may evolve into something new as international supporter culture meets Midwest traditions. Whether you love it or find it controversial, you will experience it. Over 76,000 people doing it in unison is genuinely intimidating.

BBQ terminology

'Burnt ends' are caramelized cubes cut from the point of the brisket — invented in Kansas City and found nowhere else in the world originally. A 'three-meat plate' is the standard BBQ order. 'Sweet' sauce is the KC style — molasses-based, tomato-heavy, distinct from Texas (no sauce) and Carolina (vinegar). Never criticize someone's BBQ allegiance — it is a deeply personal matter in KC.

Midwest-isms

'You bet' means 'you're welcome' — the most Midwestern possible response to 'thank you.' 'Ope' is the involuntary sound Midwesterners make when they bump into you or need to squeeze past — 'ope, just gonna scoot by ya.' 'Pop' means soda. 'The city' means KCMO. 'The Kansas side' means everything in Johnson County. If someone asks you to 'come with' they mean 'come with me' — the object is implied.

FAQ

Kansas City World Cup — Frequently Asked Questions

Twenty questions answered so you arrive prepared and leave impressed.

01

Where is Arrowhead Stadium?

1 Arrowhead Drive, Kansas City, MO 64129. Part of the Truman Sports Complex alongside Kauffman Stadium (Royals). 10 miles east of Downtown KC, directly off I-70. The sports complex is surrounded by massive parking lots on all sides.

02

Does Arrowhead have a roof?

No. Fully open-air with no roof, no canopy, and no shade over the vast majority of seats. You are completely exposed to sun, heat, humidity, and potential thunderstorms. This is the defining characteristic of the KC World Cup experience. Sunscreen and water are essential survival gear.

03

Is there public transit to Arrowhead?

No. Zero rail service, zero bus service to the stadium on match day. The KC Streetcar covers only 2 miles of Downtown. You must drive, take a rideshare, or book a car service. FIFA may organize event shuttles but capacity will be limited for 76,000 fans. This is the single biggest logistical challenge.

04

How far is MCI airport to Arrowhead?

25 miles / 25 min off-peak by car. Match day: 35–50 min depending on traffic. Take I-29 south to I-435 east, or I-29 to I-70 east. There is no rail connection from MCI airport to anywhere in the city — car, rideshare, or shuttle from the moment you land.

05

What is the tailgating like?

Legendary. Widely considered the best tailgating in all of American sports. 25,000+ parking spots with lots opening 4–5 hours before kickoff. Full-size grills, BBQ smokers on trailers, cornhole, music, cold beer, and a party atmosphere that rivals the match itself. International visitors — do NOT skip this. Arrive 3–4 hours early and eat in the parking lot.

06

Best BBQ in Kansas City?

Joe's KC (the Z-Man sandwich — smoked brisket, provolone, onion ring on a Kaiser roll). Q39 (best ribs in town). Gates BBQ (tradition since 1946, 'Hi, may I help you?'). Jack Stack (burnt ends, crown prime rib). Slap's BBQ (Strawberry Hill). LC's BBQ (no-frills, maximum flavor). Lines form early at Joe's — go before 11 AM or expect a 30+ minute wait.

07

How hot will it be?

85–95°F (29–35°C) with 50–70% humidity. Heat index regularly reaches 100–105°F. Occasional 100°F+ days. Open-air stadium means no escape from the sun during day matches. Evening matches are significantly more comfortable. Drink water before you feel thirsty. Know the signs of heat exhaustion.

08

What about thunderstorms?

Common and sometimes severe in June and July — this is Tornado Alley. Storms can develop rapidly with lightning, heavy rain, and hail. Open-air Arrowhead means matches could face genuine weather delays. Storms usually pass in 30–60 minutes. Check forecasts daily. If tornado sirens sound, seek interior shelter immediately.

09

Can I see MLS games during the World Cup?

MLS typically pauses during the World Cup window. Sporting Kansas City (Children's Mercy Park, KCK) may play before or after the tournament. KC Current (NWSL, CPKC Stadium) will likely be playing in June/July — women's professional soccer in the world's first purpose-built women's stadium. Both venues 20–25 min from Arrowhead.

10

What to do between matches?

BBQ crawl across all the legendary joints. Power & Light District nightlife. 18th & Vine jazz clubs (The Blue Room for live jazz nightly). National WWI Museum (best in the world). Nelson-Atkins Museum (free, world-class). Boulevard Brewing taproom. Crossroads gallery walk. Sporting KC or KC Current match. Country Club Plaza fountains and shopping.

11

How to reach other host cities from KC?

Dallas: 1.5 hr flight or 8 hr drive. Houston: 2 hr flight. Atlanta: 2 hr flight. Philadelphia: 2.5 hr flight. NYC (MetLife Final): 3 hr flight with multiple daily options. LA: 3.5 hr flight. Miami: 3 hr flight. KC's central location makes connections easy.

12

Is Kansas City safe?

Tourist areas — Downtown, Power & Light, the Plaza, Crossroads, Westport — are safe day and night. Standard urban awareness at night as with any city. Heavy FIFA and local police security deployment throughout the tournament. KC is genuinely friendly and welcoming. Midwest hospitality is real — people will help you without being asked.

13

Do I absolutely need a car?

Yes. Emphatically yes. No transit to the stadium. No rail from the airport. KC's free streetcar covers only 2 miles of Downtown. Uber and Lyft work but surge after events. Rent a car for maximum flexibility or book a car service for match days and use rideshare for daily exploration. Gas is cheap ($2.50–3.50/gal).

14

Is KC really the cheapest host city?

Yes, by a significant margin. Hotels $80–300, meals $8–40, parking $30–50, gas $2.50–3.50/gal, beers $4–7. Even with World Cup markup, KC is 30–50% cheaper than New York, Los Angeles, Miami, or San Francisco. Your money goes furthest here — you can eat world-class BBQ for $15 and stay in a decent hotel for $120.

15

Can I do KC and NYC together?

Absolutely. MCI to JFK or EWR is 3 hours with multiple daily flights on Southwest, American, Delta, and United. For the MetLife Stadium Final on July 19, we handle all NYC ground transportation — airport pickup, hotel-to-stadium, post-match. No surge pricing.

16

What is the clear bag policy?

Clear plastic bags 12x6x12 inches maximum. Small clutch purse 4.5x6.5 allowed as the only non-clear option. No backpacks, no messenger bags, no exceptions. Buy a clear bag before traveling. FIFA may add additional restrictions. You will be turned away at the gate without a compliant bag.

17

How bad is parking lot traffic?

Bad. 25,000+ vehicles all trying to exit simultaneously. Post-match lot exit takes 30–60 minutes. I-70 and I-435 are gridlocked. A driver who knows back roads (Blue Ridge Cutoff, Raytown Road, 40 Highway) saves 20–30 min. Car service drivers pre-position for faster exit. Or embrace the tailgate tradition: stay in the lot for an hour after the match, grill some more, let traffic clear.

18

Where will the FIFA Fan Festival be?

Likely in the Power & Light District in Downtown KC — the open plaza area is purpose-built for large gatherings with giant screens. Potential secondary locations at Crown Center or the Crossroads. Official announcements will come closer to the tournament. This is where you watch other World Cup matches on big screens with fellow fans.

19

Is tap water safe in KC?

Yes, safe throughout the metro area. Fill reusable bottles at hotel and stadium water stations. Bottled water at Arrowhead: $5–7. Stay hydrated — the combination of Midwest heat, humidity, and alcohol at the tailgate catches people off guard. Drink more water than you think you need.

20

Where to watch other World Cup matches?

FIFA Fan Festival in Power & Light District (giant screens, live atmosphere). No Other Pub at P&L (soccer-focused bar). Sporting KC watch parties at Children's Mercy Park (if organized). Sports bars throughout Downtown, Westport, and the Crossroads. Johnny's Tavern locations across the metro. Most restaurants will have matches on during the tournament.
